SABAH's Evening and Weekend Programs offer weekly adaptive ice skating for people of all abilities.Schedule & Location
SABAH’s Evening and Weekend Program Returns!
SABAH’s Evening and Weekend program provides adaptive ice skating for individuals, of any age, challenged by disability. The program is offered weekly, from October through March, at four locations throughout the Western New York region including the Bud Bakewell Riverside Rink, the Northtown Center at Amherst, the Hamburg Town Rink, and Niagara University’s Dwyer Arena. Each session lasts approximately one hour and includes basic skating skills, games, some free time, and a lot of fun!
What to expect:
Unless you would like to bring your own equipment, SABAH provides all adaptive equipment including ice skates, helmets, walkers, and Rifton Walkers for non-weight bearing individuals. When you register for the Evening and Weekend program, SABAH will contact you to determine sizes for equipment (if necessary, we will measure you for your equipment at your first session). We recommend that you dress in warm, comfortable attire and bring gloves.
Whether you bring your own helmet or use one of SABAH’s (designated for you for the season), everyone on the ice must wear a helmet.
Once at the rink, SABAH will match each participant with a volunteer unless you have designated a registered volunteer to skate with you or you prefer to skate independently. (Many parents/siblings/friends enjoy sharing time with their SABAH athlete during these sessions. However, many parents/caregivers also find that working with an unrelated volunteer fosters independence and socialization.)
To our Hamburg Town Rink Athletes and Volunteers:
We are excited to see you for the start of the 2024-2025 season! It’s our favorite time of year! But this year, we have a change of plans for the beginning of your season.
As you may have heard, the Hamburg Town Rink is undergoing a renovation project that has been experiencing significant delays. As a result, we will be unable to begin our Saturday morning program as we had planned.
BUT, WE HAVE GOOD NEWS!
Most importantly, we have a plan to keep everyone together until we can return to the rink!
For over 13 years, SABAH has offered a sport court program for both adults and children challenged by disability. So, we have a great deal of experience in adaptive programming off the ice, as well as on! In order to keep everyone together (and having fun!), we plan to use that experience to offer you an exciting adaptive recreational program on Saturday mornings at The ROCK in West Seneca until we can return to the Hamburg Town Rink. That’s right…. on the gym floor of The ROCK!
And then, rest easy! Because the Hamburg Town Rink has repeatedly assured us that we will be back on the ice before December. So, we will have plenty of time to prepare for the 2025 Celebration on Ice Show!
