2017-2018 Annual Report

Be Bold, Stay Strong, Live Fearless

The annual Celebration on Ice is a moment where we have the opportunity to witness, firsthand, the accomplishments of our winter athletes. When we think back upon our earliest days of the season in October, we remember watching many of our athletes beginning to learn difficult skills, while quite a few of our newest athletes were afraid to even take the ice. During those early fall days, we watched as volunteers gently coaxed and smiled and clapped for even the smallest achievement. Yet, after a season of innumerable small victories, we watched with great pride as our athletes performed with strength, courage, and confidence on the ice at the KeyBank Center.

In addition to our Evening and Weekend programs, the School Day Adaptive Ice Skating program, and Adults Fit and Fun; SABAH’s winter programs also included the ever popular Adaptive Ice Hockey program at the Ice at Canalside. The program, which serves our more accomplished SABAH athletes, teaches advanced skating and hockey skills, and provides these dedicated athletes with the opportunity to participate in brief scrimmages.

Prior to the winter season, SABAH’s 2017 summer program line up included The Children’s Guild Foundation’s Summer Athletes Bold At Heart program, the turf component of the Adults Fit and Fun program, and our fun-filled Summer Skate program. From our youngest children to our senior adults, hundreds of SABAH participants improved their fitness levels, grew stronger, and learned many new skills to increase their physical activity. They also had fun and made many new friends!

Each year, we watch with awe as SABAH athletes repeatedly surpass their goals. Over and over again, their fortitude and capabilities continue to amaze us. In support of their strength and perseverance, our theme for the 2017-2018 year was “Be Bold, Stay Strong, Live Fearless.” We hope that in the pages of this year’s Annual Report you will be inspired by how they stood bold, strong, and fearless in the midst of many difficult challenges.

As always, thank you for standing with these remarkable athletes over the past year. Your support made it possible for them to dream of lofty goals and then reach farther than they dreamed. On behalf of all of those we serve, we remain very grateful for your support!

With gratitude,

Sheila O'Brien

SABAH PROGRAMS

School Day Adaptive Ice Skating

From October through March, SABAH’s School Day Adaptive Ice Skating program provides children challenged by disability and economic disadvantage with a curriculum based, educational program that integrates movement with New York State Common Core Standards and life skill development.

The Children’s Guild Foundation’s Summer Athletes Bold At Heart

From May through June, children challenged by disability participated in The Children’s Guild Foundation’s Summer Athletes Bold At Heart program.  Graciously supported by The Children’s Guild Foundation, the program provides a curriculum based educational program on a sport court surface to improve skills such as balance and coordination, communication skills, and skills for independent living.

Evening and Weekend Programs

SABAH’s Evening and Weekend programs continue to thrive in four rinks across the Western New York region.  From October through March, participants enjoy weekly adaptive ice skating sessions at Riverside’s Bud Bakewell Ice Rink, the Northtown Center at Amherst, the Hamburg Ice Rink, and Niagara University’s Dwyer Arena.

Adaptive Ice Hockey

The Adaptive Ice Hockey program teaches basic skating and hockey skills in a relaxed and non-threatening environment.  During the 2018 season, SABAH hockey participants enjoyed the seven week program in the exhilarating outdoor atmosphere of the Ice at Canalside in Buffalo.

Summer Skate

SABAH’s Summer Skate offers a fun and enjoyable way to beat the summer heat with eight weekly adaptive ice skating sessions from July through August at the Northtown Center at Amherst.

Adults Fit and Fun

SABAH’s Adults Fit and Fun program is one of the few adaptive recreational opportunities specifically dedicated to meet the needs of adults challenged by disability.  Adults Fit and Fun offers increased physical activity, nutritional information, skills for independent living, and socialization for adults with special needs.  SABAH now offers the Adults Fit and Fun program year round with adaptive ice skating during the winter months and programming on a sport court surface during the spring and summer months.
