SABAH is proud to announce that longtime volunteer and dedicated instructor Joe Aungst has been selected as the 2025 SABAH Hall of Fame Inductee. His induction recognizes more than two decades of extraordinary commitment, compassion, and service to SABAH’s athletes.
Joe’s SABAH journey began when he was just a young teenager in 7th grade. At the suggestion of his teacher, Barbara Graham, Joe joined SABAH as a volunteer—a decision that would shape not only his adolescence, but also his future. Barbara also brought Joe along to assist her students in SABAH’s School Day Program, giving him his first experience supporting athletes with disabilities. Even at that early age, Joe demonstrated a natural kindness, patience, and desire to help.
Now 33 years old, Joe has dedicated more than 20 years to SABAH’s mission. Over the years, he has become a pillar of the organization—an essential presence at multiple rinks, a dependable volunteer at every SABAH event, and a “jack of all trades” who can fix walkers and any adaptive equipment needed for SABAH athletes. Joe continues his volunteer legacy through his daughter, Sophia, who now joins him on the ice to help SABAH athletes.
“I’ve been able to watch Joe grow into not just an incredible volunteer, but also an incredible father and husband, states SABAH’s Executive Director, Sheila O’Brien. “Joe’s soft-spoken nature belies his tremendous influence, as he is a steady mentor to new volunteers, a calming presence for athletes, and a trusted teammate to SABAH’s staff. His humility, consistency, and the genuine joy he brings to SABAH make him an exemplary role model for our entire community. We are incredibly proud to honor him as our 2025 Hall of Fame Inductee.”
SABAH extends its heartfelt gratitude to Joe for his unwavering dedication and for the profound impact he has made on countless athletes, families, and volunteers. His induction into the SABAH Hall of Fame is a well-deserved celebration of his service, leadership, and extraordinary heart.
